DRAFT Agenda

Background Information:

With funding from the Natural Resources Canada, Forest Communities Program, the Agroforestry Industry Development Initiative (AIDI)* and the Omineca Beetle Action Coalition, RNA will be the catalyst for establishing an agroforestry community of practice in northern BC that includes forestry and agriculture practitioners, business expertise, government and academic representatives. In the short term, this group will help to implement the objectives of the project which is to implement education and learning events to people in Northern BC. In the long-term, it is intended that the community of practice leads and supports further development and implementation of agroforestry in the region.  This project started January 2012 and will continue until 2013.

The project addresses two of AIDI strategic priorities:

        1)  Improving agroforestry awareness, education and extension through:

a.     Improved awareness among industry, agencies and the public
b.     Expanded body of BC-based extension resources; and
c.     Self-sustaining industry peer network for future agroforestry extension

       2)  Expand and strengthen agroforestry partnerships through:

a.     Stakeholder leadership of development activity and greater sector self-reliance
b.     Increased recognition and partnerships with affiliated stakeholder groups; and
c.     Increased number of stakeholders participating in development and identifying with the sector.

The project team will develop activities that will strive for the following project objectives:

1)     Awareness: Help agricultural and forestry practitioners in northern BC alike to build their awareness about agroforestry, including the science, practice and business opportunities.
2)     Regional networking: Identify currently known and previously unknown resources, facilities and practitioners of agroforestry. Develop contact lists and opportunities for networking through education and awareness activities. This might occur across the identified target region or the sub-regions within it.
3)     Knowledge and skills development: Hold workshops and field tours that provide current and potential practitioners with the skills and knowledge to implement agroforestry practices.
4)     Publications: publish hardcopy and online proceedings and summaries from workshops and networking activities.

The initial step is a workshop that will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2012 to address the following three goals:

  • Introduce the concept of an Agroforestry community of practice and the goals of the project;
  • Present local and regional examples of Agroforestry operations, and future opportunities; and
  • Develop a framework for guiding the learning activities to be implemented in the coming year.
