Northern Forestry Recruiting Network – January 2010 Listserv

Welcome to the NFRN Listserv! This is a communication tool hosted by the College of New Caledonia and Resources North. It is intended to allow those interested in the issue of recruiting forestry professionals to acquire information, share ideas and explore solutions to recruiting in this sector. It can be useful locally but will also inform provincial and national recruiting initiatives.

Job Fair and Networking Event February 4th, 2010

The CIF-Cariboo Section once again hosted an event to bring together natural resource students from UNBC and CNC with resource companies from central BC. If this is the first you have heard of this you missed a great event. Not only were there lots of students and employers “meeting and greeting” but it was lots of fun. Lakeland Mills took the Oscar for the best overall chilli. Students from UNBC and CNC joined employers that included forest companies, environmental services companies, consultants and government agencies. Forestry School Updates

Alive and doing well Thank you very much! There have been lots of changes to programs at the Forestry Schools in BC particularly at BCIT, CNC and UNBC. The schools are all still offering forestry based courses although substantially changed from past formats. Thank you to all of the company and agency advocates that supported and worked for the retention of these programs. The response from student applicants has been very positive. For more details…

The GoForestry.ca web portal is an interactive and informative web tool launched in September 2008. The site is aimed to increase awareness and educate high school students as well as the general public on forests, forestry and related career opportunities. Details…


NWCC pitches in to pitch resource management


Every fall, the Council of Forest Industries (COFI) puts on a Natural Resource Management Career Awareness Camp to encourage students in Grades 10-12 to consider forestry related careers. This September, Northwest Community College (NWCC) University Credit instructor Rick Budhwa and Regina Saimoto, Smithers and Houston campus principal, provided workshops in the Bulkley Valley related to fisheries and archaeology to 42 high school students from the area.
