Climate change and environmental education

Tracy Calogheros is the Executive Director of The Exploration Place in Prince George. The Exploration Place at The Fraser-Fort George Regional Museum, which opened in 2001, is owned and operated by the Fraser-Fort George Museum Society, a non-profit and registered charity.
Tracy writes, “At the Museum we are very interested in bringing current science to the general public through our exhibits and programs.  Most recently we hosted a traveling exhibit ‘Arctic Adventure’ bringing relevant and contemporary science about Canada’s High Arctic to Prince George.  As an interpretive facility seeing over 100,000 visitors a year, this is an ideal communication interface for the general public and climate change scientists.  I hope to raise the level of wide spread general understanding in both our visitors and staff of the science surrounding climate change; in my view, greater understanding and comprehension will lead to greater action and positive impact.
I am presently attempting to ‘green’ our Museum; no small task given our 30 year old building core, featuring 23,000 sq. feet of climate controlled environment. I am investigating means to retrofit building systems, implement recycling and composting, and generally incorporate conservation and environmental responsibility into the corporate culture at The Exploration Place. Working with my young staff and Intermediates in our child care program, we plan to implement a ‘Green Team’ over the next twelve months.”
