Being a Model Forest

McGregor Russia project.

Originally set up by the Government of Canada in 1992, the Model Forest Program was launched to address the challenge of balancing the extensive range of demands that we place on our forests with the needs of future generations.  Model Forests were established across the country to examine and test principals of sustainable forest management (SFM).  This federal program concluded in 2007, and was replaced by the Forest Communities Program.  Many of the existing Model Forests continued their operations under this program, others continued their operations through partner and other funding sources, and some closed their doors.  We all agreed that the Model Forest cooperation needed to continue, and an independent, not-for-profit Canadian Model Forest Network was formed.

Resources North is a member of the Canadian Model Forest Network and the International Model Forest Network.

INTERNATIONAL MODEL FOREST NETWORK:

The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) is a global community of practice whose members and supporters work toward a common goal: the sustainable management of forest-based landscapes through the Model Forest approach. The IMFN is comprised of all member Model Forests in existence or under development around the world.  Today, there are more than 50 sites in operation in 20 countries and that figure continues to grow.  The IMFN is active in Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Europe and Russia.

The Network itself, through its regional and international structures, provides a mechanism for efficient collaboration and information sharing amongst researchers, practitioners and policy makers. During the 2008 IMFN Global Forum, Model Forest stakeholders determined several programming priorities, or Network Initiatives, that are relevant to all members — regardless of forest region or country.

CANADIAN MODEL FOREST NETWORK:

The Canadian Model Forest Network (CMFN) is a network of 15 model forest sites across Canada. Each local site involves numerous partners who all work towards sustainable landscape management. Partners include, forest companies, Aboriginal communities, private citizens, parks, environmental groups, governments and universities. As a network the CMFN collectively works to raise the profile of model forests in Canada and around the world and coordinates relevant national initiativesCanada’s Model Forests have been conducting forest sector research, developing landscape management tools, and providing environmental education opportunities from coast to coast since the program’s inception in 1992. These efforts contribute significantly to each Model Forest region, and collectively offer new opportunities to apply sustainable forest management practices and initiatives on a national scale.
