Recognizing the Unique Capacity of University and College Campuses in the North to Address Climate Change

goBEYOND is a project of the BC Campus Climate Network: a collaboration of students, staff, faculty and administration from post-secondary institutions across the province who have come together in recognizing the role of youth in the solutions to climate change.  goBEYOND is a youth-created and youth-led project, which works to educate, inspire, engage and support our peers in taking climate action at British Columbia’s colleges and universities.  We believe our campuses can goBEYOND climate-neutral, by taking responsibility for social and ecological impacts while taking the opportunity to create climate change solutions for our communities.  Universities and colleges have a unique capacity to generate climate change solutions; no other institution in our society has the combination of education, research, economic impact and diverse expertise that can be found in our schools!
The goBEYOND project is currently being integrated into universities and colleges in Northern BC.  At UNBC in Prince George, an official launch campus, Alexie Stephens and Teresa Amiama are the goBEYOND campus organizers.  Nadia Nowak, the Northern Regional Organizer, does outreach work with Northwest Community College, Northern Lights College, College of New Caledonia and UNBC’s regional campuses.  We have a unique opportunity in the North to educate our students and future leaders on issues of climate change as efforts to adapt to the effects of climate change will be integral to future development in Northern BC. Through education and action at the post-secondary level we can develop solutions for our region.
If you are a student, staff, faculty or administrator at a campus in Northern BC we would love to tell you more about goBEYOND and find ways we can help your campus achieve sustainability.  Together we can contribute more to the solutions to climate change than we are to the problems!
