Workshop: Communities and Climate Change: Planning for Impacts and Adaptations

May 17, 2006 - The McGregor Model Forest Association, in partnership with FORREX, the University of Northern BC, and Natural Resources Canada hosted this workshop at the Prince George Civic Centre.  The workshop provided communities with information about how to prepare for the potential impacts caused by climate change, recognize areas of vulnerability, and move towards making adaptations to reduce our risks.   Details about the workshop, including media articles and the presentations delivered at the workshop, are available for viewing on the McGregor website under Climate Change Workshop.  A report of the results of the workshop is currently under development and scheduled for completion by August 2006.  One of the recommendations that came from the participants was that a letter should be written to the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments outlining the key messages from the workshop, and the need to continue building tools and resources for communities to adapt to climate change.  This is scheduled for completion by mid-July 2006.

Northern Climate Change Network

May 17, 2006 – Workshop participants embraced the concept of creating a Northern Climate Change Network.   The McGregor Model Forest has offered to be the catalyst for starting up this Network, which is intended to continue the connections and linkages that were initiated at the workshop, and to increase awareness about new information, projects, tools, and resources for making adaptations to minimize the effects of climate change on our communities.  The development of this listserv and the McGregor’s Climate Change Initiatives webpage are the first actions towards establishing tools to keep interested individuals and organizations informed of recent or upcoming events and issues.  While the listserv and website are currently one-way communication tools, the hope is to eventually develop a more interactive forum for discussions.

Ministry of Forests and Range Report

May 23, 2006 - The Chief Forester of the BC Ministry of Forests and Range has released a report "Preparing for Climate Change: Adapting to Impacts on B.C.’s Forest and Range Resources” for public review and comment by July 31st.  The report outlines 13 recommendations for preparing for climate change such as assessments of potential impacts and designing long-term trials to test seedlings in different climate zones.

An Inconvenient Truth

May 24, 2006 – Davis Guggenheim’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” about the dangers of climate change just hit the screens across North America.  This Paramount film features Al Gore presenting compelling scientific evidence about the potential impacts we can expect to see as a result of global warming.  Visit http://www.climatecrisis.net/ for more details.  McGregor will investigate the opportunity to bring this movie to Prince George and host a discussion forum after the showing.
