Workshop: Communities and Climate Change: Planning for Impacts and Adaptations

May 17, 2006 - The former McGregor Model Forest Association, in partnership with FORREX, the Canadian Model Forest Network, the University of Northern BC, and Natural Resources Canada hosted this workshop at the Prince George Civic Centre.  The workshop provided communities with information about how to prepare for the potential impacts caused by climate change, recognize areas of vulnerability, and move towards making adaptations to reduce our risks.   Media articles and the presentations delivered at the workshop are available for viewing on Resources North’s Climate Change Workshop webpage.  A report of the results of the workshop is currently under development and scheduled for completion by August 2006.

Northern Climate Change Network

May 17, 2006 – Workshop participants embraced the concept of creating a Northern Climate Change Network.   Resources North has offered to be the catalyst for this network, which is intended to continue the connections and linkages that were initiated at the workshop, and to increase awareness about new information, projects, tools, and resources for making adaptations to minimize the effects of climate change on our communities.  The development of a listserv and this Climate Change Initiatives webpage are the first actions towards establishing tools to keep interested individuals and organizations informed of recent or upcoming events and issues.  While the listserv and website are currently one-way communication tools, the hope is to eventually develop a more interactive forum for discussions.  As more information becomes available, it will be posted to the NCCN webpage.

NCCN Listserv

The NORTHERN CLIMATE CHANGE NETWORK LISTSERV is an email-based communication tool (similar to newsletters) that allows us to keep interested parties informed of recent or upcoming events and issues related to climate change.  This tool was implemented in response to recommendations made at the workshop described above. Participants indicated that there is a need for easily accessible information flow about climate change issues, research, and adaptation strategies.  This listserv was initiated to partially fulfil that request.  For more details and to view past issues, visit the listserv webpage.

Who’s Who on the Climate Change Scene

A Who’s Who webpage providing a list of climate change adaptation resources for communities was developed to assist individuals looking for contacts or information about climate change.  The list was adapted from the handout distributed by Robin Sydneysmith at the Communities and Climate Change: Planning for Impacts and Adaptations workshop held in Prince George, May 17th, 2006.  If you would like to add your organization or project to the list, please email us.
