Annual Reports
2008-09 Annual Report. This year the Resources North Association supported the continued work of the Northern Climate Change Network, the caribou research projects, the juvenile white sturgeon release event, and the completion of the Northern Forestry Recruiting Network. We initiated two new projects assessing the current state of knowledge on local issues related to integrated resource management and cumulative impacts management. Significant time was invested into the marketing and promoting the association through participation in various trade shows and networking events. The Resources North Association also continued as an active member of both the International and Canadian Model Forest Networks, and provided input into meetings and strategic initiatives.

State-of-the-Knowledge on Integrated Resource
Management and Cumulative Impacts Management
Resources North conducted a scoping and fact finding process to develop an accurate and current understanding of Integrated Resource Management (IRM) and Cumulative Impacts Management (CIM) in Northern BC. The resulting report entitled Assessing and Building State-of-the-Knowledge on Integrated Resource Management and Cumulative Impacts Management was prepared for Resources North by Tesera Systems Inc. The report’s contents are a reflection of the extensive literature search and consultations with key stakeholders carried out by the authors. The report examines key issues affecting IRM/CIM, knowledge and information gaps, barriers, and opportunities to move forward. The report also provides broad recommendations for IRM/CIM in Northern BC.

Creating a Balance
In 2003 the Integrated Resource Management Business Group (IRMBG) published the booklet Creating a Balance, to promote sustainable resource management (SRM). "Preserving and sustaining the natural environment is the cornerstone of SRM, and SRM planners carefully consider many values, including biodiversity, wildlife habitat, old-growth forests, species at risk, air quality, carbon sequestration, and conservation of soil and water.
First Nation Youth Programs in Natural Resources
Over the summer of 2005 the former McGregor Model Forest hired Brandon Prince of the Tl’azt’en Nation to complete a report titled “First Nation Youth Programs in the Natural Resource Sector of British Columbia" (PDF). This report explores the “best practices" for development and facilitation of programs for first nation youth. It includes programs or training initiatives which are aimed at increasing the participation of first nation youth in the natural resource sector of BC. An overview of five case studies provides examples of best practices for youth programs. The report is intended to provide better understanding of the involvement of first nation youth in the natural resource sector and how we can increase this participation through education and training programs.
