Backgrounder
The BC Coalition for the Implementation of the National Forest Strategy (the Coalition) has been formed to promote the advancement of sustainable forest management in BC, working with the National Forest Strategy framework. Its mission is to have BC become known as a world leader in sustainable forest management.
The Coalition is an informal organization of over thirty individuals and organizations. It began as an initiative of the former McGregor Model Forest Association in 2003 to create a forum for the advancement of sustainable forest management. Through a series of workshops, the Coalition emerged and participants decided to adopt the recently created National Forest Strategy (NFS) as a framework for its activities. The NFS has eight themes and several objectives, covering the full range of sustainable forest management activities, from ecosystem management to community well being and forest products production.
Coalition members recognize that British Columbia is a world leader in some aspects of forest management, but that many challenges and opportunities remain. Collectively the members have the capacity to identify both the areas where we can celebrate success and those where we need to focus renewed effort. As a group, and individually through their own organizations and networks, Coalition members will be advocates for advancing the knowledge and applications necessary for sustainability.
Although the Coalition will focus primarily on British Columbia, it is a regional member of the National Forest Strategy Coalition, and many of the BC members are also very active at the national level.
